There is no single best credit card, only the card that fits how you spend and how you pay. This guide compares the main card types side by side so you can narrow the field before you look at any specific offer.

Start with how you pay, not the rewards

  • If you pay your statement balance in full every month, rewards and perks matter most.
  • If you carry a balance, the interest rate (APR) matters far more than any reward rate.
  • If you are paying off debt, a balance transfer card can help, but only with a payoff plan for the promo period.

What to check before you apply

  • Annual fee, and whether the rewards you would realistically earn cover it.
  • Purchase APR, balance transfer APR and cash advance APR.
  • Introductory rates: how long they last and what the rate becomes afterward.
  • Foreign transaction fees if you travel or shop from overseas sites.
  • Late payment fees and penalty APR terms.
  • The credit range the issuer says the card is designed for.
  • Whether the issuer offers a prequalification check that uses a soft inquiry.

Protect your credit while you shop

  • Use prequalification tools where available; they generally don't affect your score.
  • Space out applications, since each hard inquiry can lower your score slightly for a while.
  • Keep utilization low on any new card, and set up autopay for at least the minimum.
