Two car insurance quotes are only comparable if they cover the same things. This guide shows how to line quotes up apples to apples and what to look at besides the price.

How to compare quotes

  • Decide your coverage limits and deductibles first, then request every quote with those same numbers.
  • Get quotes from several types of providers: insurers that sell directly, local agents and independent agents who quote multiple companies.
  • Ask each provider which discounts apply to you (bundling, safe driving, good student, low mileage and similar).
  • Compare the six-month or annual premium, not just the monthly payment, and ask about payment fees.

Look beyond the price

  • How claims are filed and handled.
  • Your state insurance department's complaint information for the company.
  • Whether the policy includes the extras you would otherwise pay for separately.

When to shop again

  • At each renewal, or when your premium jumps.
  • After moving, buying a car, adding a driver or a change in your driving record.
